Mid December marks one of my regular dates; the Hitchin Christian Centre Nativity shoot. This is firm favourite event for me and as Matt Summerfield (the senior Pastor of Hitchin Christian Centre) said is now a “Christmas Tradition!”. Each year the Christian Centre runs a series of nativity services to celebrate the Christmas story, however this year their plans to host the event in the grounds of Hitchin Priory had to be cancelled at the very last-minute, and so the service was moved back into their Church on Bedford Road. Fortunately I was able to accommodate the change of date and venue, and organised a straight-forward portrait shoot for them.
Shooting at the Christian Centre is always fun, even if sometimes it can be a marathon. The numbers were a bit lower this year due to the last-minute changes, but there were still over 70 people who wanted their portraits done requiring me to work fast to keep the line moving.
Normally the church provide either a background or tableau for me to work with, but this year for simplicity we opted for a plain white background. I was quite happy to do this since this the function room at the church is nice large space and even my 3M wide background and 4 studio lights fit comfortably with plenty of space to step back for the right perspective.
As soon as the service finished the congregation made their way up for mince pies, mulled-wine and photography, and a line quickly formed, however thanks to some great organisation Bekkie from the church soon got everyone into line ready to go.
As always with a shoot like this I had to deal with a whole range of people; excitable kids (who are always fun and have the best ideas), young teens (who need to be cajoled), babes in arms, and of course the adults (who don’t really want their photo taken – but will if they have to…. :-). So with each new group I was looking for what would work well for them, trying inject some spontaneity, and of course helping them pose into an attractive group.
In under an hour everyone had had their picture taken, giving me the chance to grab a sneaky mince-pie to round off a fun evening!

LATEST NEWS – Issues with the Pro-Gallery slide show and Internet Explorer
A few people have recently reported problems viewing the Pro-Gallery slide-show with Internet Explorer. Unfortunately this system is owned by PhotoBox and hence out of my control, however running under a different browser (for example Opera, FireFox or Chrome) seems to be more reliable.
